The Bosnian Countryside
Bosnia and Herzegovina, sometimes called Bosnia-Herzegovina, abbreviated BiH, and in short often known informally as Bosnia, is a country in Southeastern Europe located on the Balkan Peninsula. Its capital and largest city is Sarajevo.
Why did we visit Bosnia? We wanted to have a toast to Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who was assassinated exactly 100 years to the day of our visit. We feel that WW! may have been averted if he had not died.
Why was he important? Because his assassination was the first step in the domino effect beginning World War 1. To refresh your memory of 11th grade world history, here is a brief summary:
1. June 28, 1914 - Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Archduchess Sophia visit Sarajevo. He didn't want to go, but his uncle ordered him. Was his uncle in on the assassination?
2 Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Black Hand, jumps on the hood of the car and fires two shots and fatally wounds both the archduke and the archduchess
3 Austria-Hungary blames Serbia for the deaths of the archduke and the archduchess. They send Serbia an ultimatum stating, among other things, that Serbia must crush the Black Hand within a month or Austria-Hungary will declare war
4 Serbia appears to ignore the ultimatum
5 July 26, 1914 - Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia
6 Serbia asks Russia for help. Russia agrees, and begins to prepare its armies to help Serbia
7 Because of the Alliance System, France begins to prepare its armies to help Russia
8 Germany feels threatened when its two powerful neighbors begin to move their large armies
9 August 1, 1914 - Germany declares war on Russia
10 August 2, 1914 - Germany declares war on France
11 Germany decides to attack France by going through Belgium, a neutral country which was friendly with Great Britain
12 August 4, 1914 - Great Britain declares war on Germany because it had attacked Belgium. As part of the British Empire, Canada is automatically at war too
13 April 6, 1917, the U.S. joined its allies--Britain, France, and Russia--to fight in World War I. Under the command of Major General John J. Pershing, more than 2 million U.S. soldiers fought on battlefields in France.
