We stayed in a lovely little hotel called Hotel Pomenzia on booking . com it is called Hotel Flora so, of course, we had a difficult time finding the place.
We had decided to walk from the train station which only should have taken 20 min but by the time we wandered around it was nearly 1 1/2 hrs...in the 90 degree heat, dragging our bags.
**Last time I give in when hubby says... Oh honey, it's not too far. (Cheap Trick) you can change the t to a p.
Our room was small but cool clean and perfectly placed. After a quick shower we walked along the river to the Vatican.
Not only was it Saturday, but there had been some sort of athletic competition in the morning and the square was a sardine can.
Realizing the Basilica was not going to happen we made our way to the museum.
Beautiful. Pre-purchased tickets are definitely the way to go. Hundreds of people were standing in the hot sun for hours waiting for tickets and we were able to breeze right past them. Three ticket lines later we entered the museum.
The collections of art were amazing and it would take days to look at them thoroughly. We wandered through, mouths agape, snapping photos and poohing and ahhing.....until....
until.... we got into the Sistine Chapel ..the last room before exiting the museum.
Again. It was wall to wall people and as we squeezed past, around, and through them we heard people being hushed as they marveled at the beauty surrounding them. we craned our necks and tried to focus, but the crowd pushed us from one end of the room to the other too quickly.
Just as we were near the exit, I turned and snapped a photo.
Well you would have thought I shot the Pope based on one little old Italian lady who flew across the room on her broom to read me the riot act.
I didn't understand her and the situation struck me so funny that I laughingly apologized, which she obviously took as sacrilege, because she couldn't wait to fly over to a guard to tattle on me - pointing and waving and making all kinds of noise!
Boy can Italians tattle.
Someone should have shushed her!
Evidently no photos are allowed.
Anyway, I'm probably going to go to hell now. (Not that my seat wasn't already booked).
... And here is my ticket...
